My Own Practice Tutorial Video

Image
Evaluation of my own instructional video - Creating my own instructional video did prove somewhat difficult at times, but I think it turned out okay. Firstly, when it came to filming each shot I had to use a handheld camera, meaning each shot was slightly unsteady due to not having a tripod / something to rest the camera on. This made the overall video not as great as I hoped, but I know that when I do come to create my barbering dry run, and also the final product for the client, I will be using a tripod to make each shot steady, making it look more professional. Cutting between each clip, I decided to use a simple cut, rather than using something that could be distracting or things like graphic effects, as I thought that was most suitable for this genre of video. As well as this, after watching several other barbering videos, the large majority also use simple cuts from one clip to another.  Throughout the video, I tried to include a variety of different camera angles for each sh...

Analysis and Evaluation of Existing Products

I believe this is a good example of a barbering instructional video, since it includes a variety of different techniques and was very informative / easy to follow. Firstly the video includes an introduction as well as an outro, showcasing things like his brand name as well as where to find him on social media. As a business this is good since it lets him promote his work, while letting the audience access it easily.  The video opens up with a wide angle shot of someone cutting someone's hair with people surrounding him, almost like a presentation - this almost foreshadowing how this is a instructional video. As well as this, across the screen is his brand name which includes a moustache icon - instantly representing his barbering business as well as signifying how he cuts men's hair.  When editing, the video opens up with a short introduction / montage of clips, and then uses a fade out to close those clips. It also uses simple cuts to transition between each clip, which I thi...

Filming Process

Following our new campaign to create step by step barbering videos for Sunderland College, we spent the lesson practising these shots to try and get a glimpse to what we will be creating. We filmed a small variation of shots that may appear in our videos for the college, in particular close ups since we will have to see what the barber is doing.  In this shot, we got a close up of the barbers hands cutting the hair of the client. Using the manual focus on the camera, we were able to focus in on the equipment being used and get a clear shot of what was taking place.  Next, after changing the lens we got a close up shot of the equipment once again. I think this is an important attribute to the barbering video since it shows the audience what is needed to carry out the video.  Lastly, we got a close up shot of the barbers face, then moving the camera down to the barbers hands presenting what he is doing. It's important to always show what the barber is doing in the moment si...

Identifying the Client and Audience

The client for this brief are both Sunderland College and Salon Professionals Dept. Barbering in Sunderland College is based at City Campus, and is ran by lecturer Mark Sowerby. They are asking us to film a tutorial guide for a variety of barbering techniques to support learners on this course, which will be used in course and will also be accessible online. The video will have to include all the key techniques included in instructional videos, and will also have to be informal and fit the brief well.  The audience for this product are students of Sunderland college taking the barbering course, either level 2 or level 3. The demographic would be any gender but perhaps more boys, between the ages of 16 and 18 who are currently in college, of any ethnicity. The video would appeal to both those on the course, and just people interested in barbering.  To make sure my video will appeal to the audience, I need to include all of the key features featured in barbering videos. This wou...
