Identifying the Client and Audience

The client for this brief are both Sunderland College and Salon Professionals Dept. Barbering in Sunderland College is based at City Campus, and is ran by lecturer Mark Sowerby. They are asking us to film a tutorial guide for a variety of barbering techniques to support learners on this course, which will be used in course and will also be accessible online. The video will have to include all the key techniques included in instructional videos, and will also have to be informal and fit the brief well. 

The audience for this product are students of Sunderland college taking the barbering course, either level 2 or level 3. The demographic would be any gender but perhaps more boys, between the ages of 16 and 18 who are currently in college, of any ethnicity. The video would appeal to both those on the course, and just people interested in barbering. 

To make sure my video will appeal to the audience, I need to include all of the key features featured in barbering videos. This would include making the mise-en-scene appropriate to a barbering video, to ensure it fits the theme and audience - this being said, a list of item's shown in the video could be helpful to make sure the audience know what is needed to begin with. I need to include a range of different camera angles when filming, but mainly close ups so that the audience can clearly see and follow the video. While a voiceover is being used, subtitles could be used also to help a broader audience. Furthermore, I will need to make sure the pace is in real time so that the video is easy to follow. After watching other instructional barbering videos, another key feature is using a before and after to show the difference and end result. 

My video is going to be viewed on the college website, and will be shown to barbering students of both level 2 and 3 to help them with their course. I have been asked to create an instructional video for this demographic, so when creating my video I need to include all of the key features while also making sure it is easily followed.

Feedback   After distributing a google form to receive feedback and asking questions like what the audience thought and what I could improve on, I have since received answers which will help me when I come to create the final video. When asking the audience what they thought of the video, I was told that it is short and informative, as well as well edited together and the aim of the video is clear. My Own Practice Tutorial Video

Evaluation of my own instructional video - Creating my own instructional video did prove somewhat difficult at times, but I think it turned out okay. Firstly, when it came to filming each shot I had to use a handheld camera, meaning each shot was slightly unsteady due to not having a tripod / something to rest the camera on. This made the overall video not as great as I hoped, but I know that when I do come to create my barbering dry run, and also the final product for the client, I will be using a tripod to make each shot steady, making it look more professional. Cutting between each clip, I decided to use a simple cut, rather than using something that could be distracting or things like graphic effects, as I thought that was most suitable for this genre of video. Barbering Project Diary

  19/04/2021 Today I completed identifying my client and audience after going back and adding more depth. I also continued with my product analysis, as well as learning more on semiotics  26/04/2021 After completing all of AC1 and my evaluation for both existing videos, I spent the lesson filming footage to go in my practice run video, and will continue to edit it during next lesson. Afterwards I will upload it along with my other practice run video, and evaluate both. 03/05/2021 This week I completed my barbering practice video, which took longer than I hoped due to the software not working for several days. Once complete I have uploaded it to my youtube, and next week will create a survey to get feedback.
